East Oakland Building Healthy Communities

To achieve our work, we facilitate active collaborations (Action Teams) with youth, residents and community partners through our three Action Teams: Health Happens in Schools, Health Happens in Neighborhoods and Health Happens through Culture, Arts, Storytelling & Healing.

The Schools Action Team ensures that the Oakland Unified School District and Alameda County of Education are transparent and accountable for policy decisions and budgets that most impact East Oakland students and families.

The Schools Action Team is currently working on the following project:

EAST OAKLAND SCHOOLS POWERBUILDING SERIES - A series of events that brings together youth, residents/parents and community partners to build power towards holding the District accountable to East Oakland students, families and educators.

The Neighborhoods Action Team advances equitable development in East Oakland and engages residents & youth in leadership development around land use policies, healthy food access, housing and environmental justice and anti-displacement strategies.

The Neighborhoods Action Team is currently engaged in two big projects:

THE HEALTH DEVELOPMENT GUIDELINES (HDG) - The Healthy Development Guidelines is a Tier 1 project of East Oakland BHC, which uses the following seven categories to ensure that the health of our residents is kept a priority: Environmental Health; Economic Opportunity; Community, Culture & Safety; Healthy Food; Transportation; Housing; and Recreation & Active Design. Culture, Arts, Storytelling & Healing (C.A.S.H.) Action Team creates and showcases a more robust narrative about East Oakland’s dynamic cultural and artistic roots.

The C.A.S.H. Action Team is currently working on two large projects:

EAST OAKLAND BLACK CULTURAL ZONE (BCZ) - The BCZ is a vision of a neighborhood that is proud to be Black – one that supports Black-run businesses, promotes healthy choices and lifestyles, offers education that give our youth their true stories and legacies, and that lifts up and celebrates Black cultural traditions and innovations. SUGAR FREEDOM PROJECT - The Sugar Freedom Project engages East Oakland communities in dialogue and action about the role of sugar in communities of color, and lifts the experiences and priorities of the most affected in the implementation of the Soda Tax. Find out more information !

OAKLAND-ALAMEDA COUNTY & STATEWIDE ALLIANCES FOR BOYS & MEN OF COLOR - These alliances focus on identifying and implementing programs, practices and policies for improving outcomes for boys and men of color experiencing significant disparities in outcomes, especially in education, health and employment.
